Northside's Partnership Walk

Hey everyone

I ran across a group of students that are making a difference in the world. The text below is from an email I received about an event that raised awareness and money for a couple of great causes. If you have any interest in assisting with this organization or want to get in touch with them, check out the web addresses that are included in the text.

The Partnership Walk is an event sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation and it aims to provide tools for third world countries such as Tajikistan, East Africa, and other rural areas in the Middle East and Africa. The Aga Khan Foundation is a part of a larger network called the Aga Khan Development Network that encompasses other organizations such as the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, The Aga Khan Award for Architecture and others. The Partnership Walk specifically raises money for the Aga Khan Foundation. The aim of the Foundation is to provide natives with technical skills such as building bridges, schools, providing healthcare and education for their village/area. 100% of the money raised goes directly towards the cause because the walk itself is funded by the Aga Khan development Network. All of the money that was raised will go towards the many incentives of the foundation. One of them is Milk for Hope which is a program that provides milk to schools in Tajikistan as an incentive for children to take the 10 mile walk to school. A recent project is the construction of the University of Central Asia which will provide locals an opportunity for a higher education. This year we formed a team at Northside called the Global Youth of Chicago and we had a total of 46 members with 42 of them being Northsiders. As a team we raised $1,660.00 and 38 Northsiders came to the walk held in Millennium Park. 8 Northsiders also participated in the walk’s interactive village in action and ran an obstacle course for the public that demonstrated the difficulty of getting water in East Africa. If you have any more questions you can visit the websites for the walk and the network at www.partnershipwalk.org or at www.akdn.net.

ONE

Hey everyone

This blog is dedicated to talking about the ONE organization and how it impacted the global community by getting each local community involved in attempting to erase poverty from the world. You may have heard of the organization by seeing Bono from U2 promote it or saw the "red" clothing line at the GAP.

On Oct 17, Northside College Prep's ONE colloquium was able to get the entire school to participate in ONE's global event to stand up to erase poverty and injustice from the world. There were speakers talking about injustice and poverty in the world, a fundraising that raised $1500.00, and a feeling that left the student body and staff with an inspiration to do more. You can read more about this global event at the ONE web site. Pictures of the event are on the ONE web site.

Oct 17 proved that one person, community, and organization can make a difference. Now we need to follow up and make every day like Oct. 17.
